G1 Students' Virtual Field Trips

Grade One students have been learning about the Past, Present, and Future as their latest Unit of Inquiry. As a part of this inquiry process students have been diving into their learning to find information to answer questions such as "what is different and what is similar about people, places, and events in the past, present, and future?"

One day in the classroom the students were confused that "Field Trip" was on the daily schedule. Without leaving the classroom (or even their seats!) the class took 2 Google Expeditions. What an exciting way for students to experience Virtual Field trips!

The first one was to walk with dinosaurs from museums all over the world. The second was to visit all the planets of our solar system, even the International Space Station with a spectacular view of the Earth. As students explored using their iPads, conversations were sparked about what they were seeing and experiencing. Google Expeditions bring a whole new level of engagement to the classroom.

Four lucky students even got to experience the new Virtual Reality headsets with Elementary Technology Integrationist; Mr. David Griffith. This was a fully immersive experience including visuals and sound as these students came face to face with a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Gael, a G1 student who participated in the Virtual Field Trip, reflected, "It was so much fun because we looked in many museums at dinosaurs."
