Elementary School Principal Message
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year in the Elementary School at St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju. The administration, faculty, and staff are looking forward to an outstanding and successful school year and I’d like to take this chance to offer some background on our programs for this year.
Our Early Childhood program follows the Reggio Emilia approach to learning. Your children will have many opportunities to learn and engage their curiosity through exploration, investigation, and play. We have an excellent student-teacher ratio, which ensures many opportunities for small group and individual attention.
Our Elementary School students are immersed in English instruction with the support of the Classroom Teachers, as well as English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teachers and Assistant Teachers. All of our teachers encourage students to use their 21st-century skills of collaboration, cooperation, communication, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving.
Our Balanced Literacy program follows the Reading and Writing Units of Study developed by Lucy Calkins and the Workshop Model approach. Within the workshop structure, teachers are able to address both the whole group’s needs as well as differentiating for the needs of small groups and individuals.We focus is on the four domains of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Our objectives are for students to be able to understand and explain their thinking and learning.
Our Math program, Eureka Math, builds students deep understanding and fluency in math through hands-on activities. Crafted by teachers and math scholars, the curriculum carefully sequences mathematical progressions to maximize coherence and mastery of mathematics from grades PK through grade 5.
Through the Stemscopes program, our Science Instructional Specialists gives students the opportunity to question and define problems, investigate, analyze and interpret data, construct explanations, and obtain, evaluate and communicate information.
Our Social Studies Units of Study allow the students to find their personal interests under the umbrella of a unit theme. Students use research skills, note-taking, analyze and critique websites, learn content and present this information in a creative way.
Grades 1-5 attend Korean Classes five times a week for Native Korean, Chinese for Native Chinese and Korean as a Foreign Language for our foreign students.
Students participate in Physical Education, Art and Music and have opportunities to visit the Makerspace and Library. Our Technology Integrationist supports all students and teachers in the classroom throughout the year.
