SJA Jeju Elementary School Winter Concert

4th and 5th-grade students had the honor of being the first group to perform in the main theater of the Performing Arts Complex (PAC) on December 18. Students demonstrated a variety of musical skills through singing, dancing, and playing in a xylophone ensemble. Students played three parts simultaneously on the xylophones and danced traditional dances that required coordination with both the rhythm and form of the music. Several of the songs they sang were two parts and they sang in English and Yoruba, an African language is spoken in Nigeria. The program was an eclectic mix of songs and dances from different parts of the world. The students performed a Nigerian carol, a Chassidic round, and folk dances from Russia and Sicily.

Students were comfortable performing in front of a large audience of teachers, other students, and parents. The program required them to often sing while they transitioned to a different part of the concert, and they were able to do this with poise and confidence.

The elementary music teacher, Mr. Tompkins, noted that the 4th and 5th-grade students showed great enthusiasm during the rehearsal process and during the performance. "Our students have strong musical skills and a lot of interest in music," he said. "They learned so much music in two months; it is a testament to the musical skills and experiences they come to SJA Jeju with." He also added, "I am looking forward to working with the students on more complex music and putting together a fantastic spring concert!"
