2018/19 KISAC Tournament and Athletic Competitions Report for the Fall Season

This Fall saw SJA Jeju embark on its first full season of athletics. With over 150 students competing against other schools in tennis, swimming, cross country, badminton, volleyball, golf, and soccer.

Our programs have grown rapidly, due mostly to our dedicated coaches, and we are competing on level ground with older, and sometimes more experienced schools. Some noteworthy results from season one were:

  • Golf: Hee Ju Cho (G11), 2nd place GEC girls golf championships
  • Tennis: Seo Yeon Yang (G7), 3rd place varsity girls doubles / Gil Hu Kang (G 10), 3rd place boys singles
  • Cross Country: Liam Faulhaber (G2), 4th overall in the G3 category
  • Swimming: we completed in our first ever swim meet, our students all did great with Won Suk Song, Yon Jun Kim, Hyo Kim, and Jihoon Yang winning the 4X50m freestyle event

Our Season culminated with the KISAC South tournaments for soccer, volleyball, and badminton. 5 schools from the mainland flew down to join the 4 GEC schools for a fantastic weekend of sports.

Our Middle School girls and boys soccer teams traveled to Branksome Hall and NLCS Jeju respectively, to compete in the two day event. Our girls won their first ever game, finishing 4th with So Young Choi being chosen as MVP, for her hard work and dedication from the beginning of the season and improving remarkably as our center defender. The boys sent 3 teams to play. Our A team had an amazing pool game, drawing 5-5 with the eventual winners, some mixed results saw them narrowly miss out on a bronze medal. Hyo Jun Kim starred in goal for the B team, saving all the penalties in the quarter-final shootout, they too narrowly missed out on the bronze medal. Our C team, made up mostly of Grade 6 students, managed 3rd place in their pool.

We hosted the High School volleyball games with 9 schools and 12 teams setting up camp in our state-of-the-art facilities for the weekend. Our A and B teams, without any seniors, displayed fantastic spirit and fought hard all tournament, both taking second place in the Plate and Shield finals respectively.

Jae Jung Kim was selected for the All Tournament Team.

We had a great turnout for Middle School Badminton. Min Gyu Lee finished 2nd in the A division, Ha Yun Jung 3rd. They then teamed up to take 3rd in the doubles. Outstanding results!

Chan Hwa (Jack) & Bing Cheng (Tim) took silver in the B division doubles. Ha Ryn Kim, only in G6, and Ryeo Won Kang made it into the quarterfinals of the girls tournament.

We now look forward to the Winter season of High School basketball and Middle School volleyball.
